Organ Sale

The sale of organs is currently illegal, but a philanthropist offers an interesting way to address the organ shortage. He offers to pay family members of people who are brain dead but did not sign organ donation cards $10,000 to agree to donate the organs of the deceased. Is this an unethical offer? Should the laws be changed to allow payment for organs from live donors, such as kidneys?

  1. We find it unethical to accept a money donation from donated organs from a patient because it will financial benefit the family. We feel the laws should be changed to allow payments for organ donation from a person living, who is brain dead on grounds that regulations would be placed for direction of money use in ways that do not directly benefit the family, instead benefit the community in ways such as charity that may help research causes of brain damage. We also debate that if the money is not directly benefiting the family, will this increase the chances that acceptance to donate will occur? As a group we agree that a donation to a charity will increase donation, however it will not increase as much as it would if the family was directly receiving money, yet we deem the direct payment to be unethical.
